
This pergola took about a month to build. Below is a slideshow of pictures taken along the way as well as more views of the finished structure. The plan view drove the layout of the flower beds and bluestone path, which has a cobblestone border in the shape of two hyperbolas. Grapevines planted at the two front posts and clematis at the rear posts are just beginning to reach the structure and should cover it in a couple of years. I’ll add more photos then.
During the construction, in November of 2007, prospective MIT students participated in an online contest to figure out what John was making. The guesses were great and can be seen here.
